Besides the obvious, is the 4 door Jeep Cherokee (XJ) better/different than the 2 door model?

Everyone has said to get the 4 door model when looking to buy a Jeep Cherokee (XJ). Is there any difference between the two models besides one having 2 doors and one having 4 doors? Is convenience the only factor because I like the look of the 2 door XJ’s but if there is something mechanically different or unsound, I don’t want to make a mistake.

is really up to you….What you like! They are the same but i prefer a 2 door just because it has a shorter rear drive line.

2 doors are DEFINITELY not for family travel.

Dont listen to your buddies, their are a few minor differences with the 2D from the 4D, but none of them involve the wheelbase or track of the vehicle as claimed above me. Same powertrain, frame, and options were available from the factory.

Other than the obvious, that the 2D has two less doors, the doors are also a little longer than the 4D’s. This isn’t important until you need to replace a door, because only 1/5 of all XJs built were 2D (most of which were pre-97). There has also been stories of the 2D having more uni-body flexing than the 4 door, but is only relevant if you plan on wheeling the XJ (even then, many companies make stiffeners).

With that said, there is no reason to stay away from the 2D. As long as you can handle folding the seat up to get in the back, your good to go. The 2 door is in my opinion a lot better looking, and if you can find a 97+ 2D you will own a some what rare jeep.
