I bought a 1992 Jeep Cherokee recently and I’m not sure if overdrive works right on it. How can I tell?

I don’t know if there is a switch to turn it off or on. If not, how do you engage overdrive? Is there a light on the dash or somewhere that comes on when it is in overdrive? I’ve been having trouble with the front end of the Jeep shaking when I drive on the interstate between 45 and 65 mph. I understand what overdrive does, but I have never owned a vehicle with it before. I just don’t know if it is working right on my 1992 Jeep Cherokee.

Overdrive is a gear your car/truck shifts into at a certain speed to gear the motor down so you save gas and run at a lesser rpm. It’s sometimes called a “highway gear”. You can tell if you have it if your Jeep shifts into a 4th gear! Thus “overdrive”!!!It’s the gear after drive……There should be a light indicator on your dash that says “OD on” or vise-versa! Your manual should advise you if you have it. Overdrive shifts around 60mph, depending on the vehicle. As for your front end shaking…..that has nothing to do with overdrive!!! Get that front end looked at! Could be tire/s out of alignment, loose lug nuts, tie rod end/s,ECT,ECT. Good luck!

As far as the overdrive goes just listen to the engine as your driving and count how many times it shifts. If you have a rpm gage you can watch to see how many times it drops in rpm. Your front end shaking could be tires out balance, alignment, or damaged parts. Take it to a front end shop and have it looked at.

1. DRIVE DOWN THE HIGHWAY IN OVERDRIVE.

2. SHIFT TRANS INTO DRIVE AND IF THE TACHOMETER RISES THEN THE OVERDRIVE IS WORKING.

3. IF NOT THEN….

YOU SHOULD GET THE VEHICLES COMPUTER SCANNED AND CHECK FOR ANY PROBLEMS AS WELL AS CODES AND THEN YOU WILL HAVE A GOOD IDEA ON WHAT THE PROBLEM TRULY IS.

TRY FINDING AN INDEPENDENT SHOP INSTEAD OF THE DEALER OR A CHAIN STORE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OVERALL MORE PLEASED WITH THE FINDINGS AND THE SERVICE.
