Universal catalytic converter in my 2004 Jeep Cherokee makes engine rattle?

Recently the catalytic converter in my 2004 Jeep Cherokee was stolen. My insurance approved an after market converter that seemed to work fine for about two months; now its very loud and noisy; wondering why and what I can do about it. The bodyshop won’t work with me, saying there is nothing wrong with car except that it is getting old at 88,000 miles!

wait for the car to cool down, then go and re-tighten the bolts that connect the catalytic converter to the Y-pipe. This is a necessary step sometimes because the bolts heat up, expand, then cool down and contract so the joints become loose.

I put a universal on my 1998 S-10 and it did the same thing. They’re junk. Unfortunately my suggestion is to have a factory converter installed and it isn’t cheap; around $1,000.
Sorry.

You should have never accepted a aftermarket cat to start with.

They are responsible to return your car to a reasonable condition AND I cannot think of anyone that considers aftermarket cat’s as “reasonable” quality parts.

They are JUNK.

Call the insurance back and tell them you want manufacturer quality components installed. They certainly were not going for dealer parts on the cat w/o you pushing the issue. It’s time to push!
