Why does my 1996 jeep cherokee shake terribly when it picks up speed?

My 1996 jeep grand cherokee shakes terribly when it picks up speed and it drives very bumpy the ride is no where near smooth. The shaking is so terrible the vehicle is hard to control. It only stops if the brake is pressed and the vehicle comes to almost a complete stop. Could the axle or tire rods have something to do with this?

It could be the road. I’ve driven several large vehicals that can’t get past 60 mph before shaking. The bumps in the road are just right to cause the shaking.

yes, though it may also have something to do with your tires being out of balance or a warped wheel rim. You need to get this fixed soon so you dont wear out your wheel bearings…

Could be the tracking, or the shock absorbers, or the wheel balancing. Would suggest you get it checked out….for your own safety.

Take it to the shop. It could be as simple as a bent wheel or as serious as abad axle.

There are many different reasons it could be shaking. One: It needs an alignment. Your tires may need to be rotated. Or sometimes, in some real bad cases, your going to need a new front end. I have 6 Jeeps and 5 of those have had these problems. I believe it was the way Jeeps are made. Be careful, they also have electrical problems.

I agree with the tire balancing. check your air pressure in the tires or take it to bell tire or discount tire or where ever you get your tires. they generally check them for free if you go there all the time.

it sounds what your are experiencing is what is commonly referred to as death wobble.
check your ball joints, tie rod ends, but the culprit is more then likely going to be the track bar.

My 1999 Grand Cherokee did the SAME thing, and would shake so violently, I thought the steering wheel would jump off. It only did it around 45 mph, and everyone told me that it was my tires. And they were right. When I got new tires, the shaking went away.
